‘Something in it': Cars stall out after filling up at West Oak Lane gas station
Mar 30, 2026
After filling up their tanks at a North Philadelphia gas station recently, drivers have been dealing with their cars stalling out just blocks away.
Their mechanics explained that the problem wasn’t with their vehicle, but what they put in the gas tank.
Eduardo Ramirez’s Acura is his firs
t car and his prized possession but it caused him a big headache as well as a lot of money this month.
“At the end of the day, $2,200 bill,” Ramirez said.
According to Ramirez, there was nothing wrong with his car until he filled up at a Sunoco station on the 1700 block of West Cheltenham Avenue in the West Oak Lane section of Philadelphia.
“I got no further than Broad and 69th Avenue and my car just shut down on me,” he said.
He took the vehicle to his mechanic who said he found a mixture of gasoline, oil and water inside the tank.
“He showed me the gas he pulled from the car. He said, ‘I’m not exactly sure what this is, but it’s not all gas. There’s something in it,'” Ramirez told NBC10.
The manager of another body shop said they found water in the tanks of three other vehicles that came to them after leaving the station and breaking down.
NBC10 went to the gas station on Cheltenham Avenue.
The man who runs the store said he is looking into the situation and is taking it seriously.
A spokesperson for the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, which manages gasoline quality standards, says they have not received any complaints tied to this specific gas station.
We are waiting to hear back from Sunoco to see if they are aware of the situation.
