Harmony Park, the fifth and final art installation in Baltimore’s $1 million “Inviting Light” initiative, will open to the public on April 17. Bloomberg Philanthropies, the Central Baltimore Partnership and Mayor Brandon Scott have scheduled a grand opening ceremony for artist Ekene Ij eoma’s artwork from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at 1707 Barclay St., where it is currently taking shape. According to an announcement on social media, Ijeoma is reimagining an underutilized urban space to create a gathering spot “where human energy powers light, connection and a renewed sense of safety.” The installation consists of a series of metal poles that will light up when people touch them. “Ijeoma uses a human phenomenon to power Harmony Park, as the body consists of roughly 60 percent salty water, making it a conductor of human electricity,” the organizers explain. “By holding hands and touching the poles, participants connect physically and energetically with others as they create human circuits to illuminate the installation.” The opening ceremony will include music, poetry and remarks by artist Derrick Adams, who curated the Inviting Light initiative. Baltimore is one of eight cities that were selected in 2023 to receive up to $1 million in funding from Bloomberg Philanthropies’ Public Art Challenge to develop temporary public art projects that address civic issues. In all, five artists or teams of artists were selected to create light-based works of art designed to help revitalize Baltimore’s Station North Arts District. The Neighborhood Design Center was another facilitator. The first four installations were unveiled in 2025 and are all still on view. They are: “Third Watch,” by Zoë Charlton at North Avenue Market, 10-30 West North Ave.; “Big Ass Snake(plants)s On A Plane,” by Phaan Howng at the Charles Street Garage, 1711 N. Charles St.; “Aurora,” by Tony Shore, on the front façade of the former Gatsby’s nightclub at 1817 N. Charles St., and “Soft Gym,” by Daniel Wickerham and Malcolm Lomax, at 101 W. North Ave. More information is available @invitinglightbaltimore on Instagram. ...read more read less
