This season will be the last for Philadelphia’s professional box lacrosse team. On Monday, March 30, the Philadelphia Wings announced that they will cease operations following the end of the 2025-2026 season. “This was not an easy conclusion to reach, and it is one we considered with great ca re,” a team spokesperson wrote. “Since the Wings’ re-establishment in 2017 and return to the turf in 2018, the team has proudly carried on Philadelphia’s rich lacrosse tradition at the highest level.” ❤ pic.twitter.com/7kdxWDI7Cd— Philadelphia Wings (@NLLwings) March 30, 2026 The Wings were one of the four original teams in the Eagle Pro Box Lacrosse League, a professional box lacrosse league that launched in 1987. The league was renamed the Major Indoor Lacrosse League in 1989 and then the National Lacrosse League (NLL) in 1998. The team relocated to Uncasville, Connecticut, in 2014 and was renamed the New England Black Wolves. Then in 2017, an NLL expansion franchise was given to Comcast Spectacor in Philadelphia. The new team took on the Philadelphia Wings name. The Wings played at the now-demolished Spectrum from 1987 through 1996 and the former Wells Fargo Center, now the Xfinity Mobile Arena. The Wings have the most titles in the league’s combined history with six in all. With a 4 and 12 record, the Wings were eliminated from playoff contention this season.
