COLUMBIA, SC (WOLO) — As No Kings rallies took place in multiple cities across the U.S. Saturday afternoon, a large number of protesters were at the State House to have their voices heard. The event was headed by the group 50501 and is meant to take on what they refer to as the anti-democratic and illegal actions of the Trump administration — including the ongoing war on Iran. Over 20 local organizations also took part in a simultaneous activism fair during the protest. Sam Gibbons, local 50501 liaison spoke to the crowd saying, “Does bombing school children provide for the common defense? Do rising costs in energy, fuel, healthcare, and home buying provide for the general welfare? Does the surveillance state — ICE and soldiers in our street — secure the blessings of liberty? For our future generations to have any hope of that more perfect union, we need to act.” Over 30 candidates across South Carolina also attended the rally. “Right now it’s just affordability. Gas prices are through the roof, groceries are still up. People are just concerned if they can afford anything just to live right now, and I don’t think we’re taking that serious enough for the people of SC,” says Rep. Jermaine Johnson, candidate for governor. “Lindsey Graham could not be happier about this war but the news I have for him is there’s no political constituency for an unnecessary forever war overseas,” says Dr. Annie Andrews, candidate for U.S. Senate. Senator Lindsey Graham previously responded directly to protesters on his social media saying in part, “Nothing you can do or say is gonna change my mind. Drink a lot of water and stay hydrated.” Categories: Local News, News Tags: Annie Andrews, Jermaine Johnson, Lindsey Graham, No Kings Rally ...read more read less
