Staffing shortages led to flight delays and lengthy security lines at the San Diego International Airport Friday amid a government shutdown that has left airport workers across the country working without pay. The security lines stretched out the door on Friday morning at SAN’s Terminal 1, whe re the where CLEAR and TSA Pre-Check lines were closed. Instead, all travelers were being funneled into one line. Across the country, TSA workers have been working without pay, leading some to call out of work or quit. The long lines came after an evening of flight delays from a lack of air traffic controllers. On Thursday evening, hundreds of flights were delayed due to a shortage of air traffic controllers, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. Without air traffic controllers, the FAA said it has reduced the number of planes that can land at the San Diego Airport, which they call an airport closure. The closure was expected to be lifted by 1 a.m., but it appeared it was still in effect Friday morning. The uncertainty has led travelers to arrive at the airport four hours or more ahead of time, they told NBC 7 on Friday. Travelers and anyone picking up someone from SAN were urged to check their flight status. Some relief may be ahead. Overnight Friday, the U.S. Senate voted to fund much of the Department of Homeland Security, which TSA is a part of. The funding bill next goes to the U.S. House of Representatives on Friday.
