Padres starting pitcher Nick Pivetta was not sharp to start the game. Pivetta walked three batters, gave up two hits and allowed four first-inning runs, putting the Padres in a 4-0 hole.
In the third, the Tigers once again pushed runs across home plate, as Parker Meadows’ soft single to left field scored two more runs, making it 6-0 Detroit.
Pivetta threw 69 pitches in the first three innings. Ron Marinaccio came on in relief. After a scoreless fourth inning, he gave up a two-run homer to Dillon Dingler, making it 8-0 Tigers. The Tigers 6-7-8 hitters in the batting order drove in their eight runs.
Detroit starting pitcher Tarik Skubal got through the first three innings on 35 pitches, giving up no runs.
In the sixth inning, the Padres scored their first run of the season when Xander Bogaerts doubled down the line in left, scoring Fernando Tatis Jr.
San Diego trimmed the deficit to 8-2 in the seventh inning when Ramon Laureano hit a solo home run to left field.
For the game, Skubal pitched six innings, striking out six, allowing three hits and one unearned run.
The Padres and Tigers continue their season-opening series Friday at Petco Park.
