OpenAI adult chatbot put on hold ‘indefinitely,’ according to report

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- Earlier this week, OpenAI made headlines when it pulled the plug on its AI video generation app, Sora. No reason was given for the abrupt shutting of Sora, which was just made available as a standalone app six months ago.
The news was followed by reports that Disney was pull
ing out of a deal it had made last year to invest $1 billion into the ChatGPT parent company. However, reports have circulated that the leading AI company is reining in side projects in an effort to focus on its core business.

Another casualty of that narrowing of focus looks to be OpenAI's proposed plans for an "adult mode" chatbot. That's according to a widely cited story in The Financial Times, which reports that the company has paused plans for the erotic chatbot "indefinitely."
The company has reportedly pulled the plug on the project after pushback from employees and investors amid growing concern over the use of AI to generate sexualized content. A Napa County man was recently arrested for allegedly using AI to create child porn.
Elon Musk's Grok AI chatbot is facing multiple lawsuits alleging it generates sexualized images of minors.
Reports that the company is shelving the adult chatbot come after an announcement from the company earlier this month that it would be "pushing back the launch" of its adult mode to "focus on work that is a higher priority for more users right now."
