A few intriguing decisions highlight Giants' 2026 MLB Opening Day roster
Mar 25, 2026
SAN FRANCISCO — The biggest spring roster decision for the Giants was made a few days before they returned to Oracle Park. Top prospect Bryce Eldridge was told last week that he will start this season back in Triple-A.
The rest of the puzzle came together Wednesday morning, a few hours before
the Giants will open the 2026 MLB season against the New York Yankees. Veteran Jared Oliva won the final bench spot and right-handers Keaton Winn and Caleb Kilian will fill out the eight-man bullpen. Here’s the entire Opening Day roster for this weekend’s series:
The clear a roster spot for Oliva, the Giants DFA’d young outfielder Luis Matos. The 24-year-old was out of options and had an inconsistent camp. It’s likely the end of the line in orange and black for a former top prospect.
The biggest competition at the end of camp was in the outfield, with several players with varying skill sets vying for the jobs behind Heliot Ramos, Harrison Bader and Jung Hoo Lee. Jerar Encarnación will be the fourth outfielder and is likely to start at designated hitter often over the first few weeks of the season.
Oliva played in the big leagues with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2020 and 2021 and spent all of last season in Triple-A, where he stole 57 bases in 63 attempts. He stole 14 bases in 15 attempts this spring and regularly gets above 30 feet-per-second with his sprint speeds.
The rotation was set from the start of camp and all five starters stayed healthy, meaning the only pitching decisions were with the bullpen. The Giants filled one hole last week by signing lefty Ryan Borucki, who will join Matt Gage and Erik Miller from that side at the start of the season.
Ryan Walker is in line to close, but the Giants need others to step up and become late-inning options. Kilian, who was traded away in 2021 for Kris Bryant, had a huge spring, regularly hitting 99 mph. Winn did, too, and like Kilian, he brings premium stuff to a bullpen that needs swing-and-miss.
There were no surprises with the infield, with Casey Schmitt and Christian Koss returning as the two backups.
Daniel Susac was the heavy favorite to back up Bailey going into camp, and the Rule 5 Draft selection will make his MLB debut at some point in the coming days. Susac hit .350 with two homers in spring training and will become the second member of his family to catch for the Giants, joining older brother Andrew, who once backed up Buster Posey.
With Susac winning the job, veteran Eric Haase was released. The Giants also put relievers Sam Hentges (shoulder), Joel Peguero (hamstring) and Reiver Sanmartin (hip) on the IL.
