INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — We’re still on pace for record high temperatures Thursday with a risk of strong-severe storms into Thursday night.
Wednesday night: Showers and isolated storms will slide in late tonight through early Thursday morning before
sunrise. There could be some isolated instances of small hail as well.
Lows in the mid to upper 50s.
Thursday: After dealing with early morning activity, we’ll settle into a warm, more humid, and breezy day. Wind gusts will be up to 30-35 MPH. Record high temperatures are starting to look likely for several locations in the state. Indy’s record high tomorrow is 80 from 1907.
Then, all eyes will be on strong to severe storm potential Thursday evening-night into early Friday morning. Areas near/north of I-70 have been upgraded to a level 3/5 strong-severe storm risk. The emphasis on tomorrow evening-night’s threats remains fixated on concerns for large hail and damaging winds. Rough timing on severe threat from 6 PM Thursday to 4 AM Friday from north to south.
The tornado risk is also still low overall. Current thinking is areas near/north of a Lafayette-Muncie line have a slightly higher risk for isolated tornadoes, but again, this is not a highly elevated threat in general. It will depend on if anything forms ahead of the cold front and stays discrete.
We could see some discrete cells fire off first into late Thursday afternoon-evening near or just behind the cold front. We’ll have to keep an eye on if anything does get out ahead of the front. Eventually, a more linear storm mode will emerge deeper into Thursday night as activity gradually moves more into central Indiana. The overall risk decreases the further south you go.
There could also be some flooding issues due to potential training of heavier rain. Isolated spots of 1-2″+ of rain are possible.
Friday: The end to the workweek is much cooler and breezy with potential for some lingering showers through sunrise. Highs will only get into the upper 40s.
7-Day Forecast: Temperatures will warm back up quickly through the last weekend of March. Highs look to rise into the low 60s by Sunday. Then, we’re right back into the 70s by Monday. Next week may feature more rounds of active weather as well.
