Temporary Closure Needed to Construct Safer Crossing for Pedestrians and Bicyclists
LEXINGTON, Ky. (March 25, 2026) – Construction on the Newtown Pike (KY 922) Widening Project and Legacy Trail improvements will require a long-term detour and partial closure of the trail. During construction, cre
ws will realign the trail, build a new pedestrian underpass south of Citation Boulevard, and construct 1,200 feet of new trail connecting to Newtown Court. Once complete, the trail will pass under Newtown Pike, providing a faster and safer crossing for pedestrians and bicyclists.
Beginning Monday, March 30, Legacy Trail will close between Newtown Springs Drive and Citation Boulevard To detour east, pedestrians and bicyclists will take Newtown Springs Drive to Newtown Center Way to Citation Boulevard. To detour west, take Citation Boulevard to Newtown Center Way to Newtown Springs Drive. Pedestrians should use the sidewalk. After the detour, traffic can continue on the Legacy Trail.
Monday, March 30
The Legacy Trail will close to all pedestrians and bicyclists between Newtown Springs Drive and Citation Boulevard.
To detour east, pedestrians and bicyclists will take Newtown Springs Drive to Newtown Center Way to Citation Boulevard.
To detour west, take Citation Boulevard to Newtown Center Way to Newtown Springs Drive.
Pedestrians should use the sidewalk.
This portion of the trail will reopen once work is complete.
This work is part of the Newtown Pike (KY 922) widening project. When complete in 2027, this project will add a lane in each direction on Newtown Pike (KY 922) from New Circle Road (KY 4) to I-75, improving safety and traffic flow by increasing capacity to handle current and future traffic volumes. All work/closures are scheduled on a tentative basis, and subject to change depending on weather conditions, emergencies and other factors beyond the control of the Department of Highways.
District 7 includes: Anderson, Bourbon, Boyle, Clark, Fayette, Garrard, Jessamine, Madison, Mercer, Montgomery, Scott and Woodford Counties.
