No arrests yet following violent weekend in Indianapolis
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Police on Monday told News 8 they have not made any arrests in a spate of weekend shootings but they believe they know who to look for.
Two people were killed and another nine wounded in a total of eight shooting
s over the weekend.
Just before 10 a.m. Saturday, one man died and another was put in critical condition after a fight led to a shooting on the near north side. The shooting happened while people were gathered inside Antioch Baptist Church for a funeral.
Two other people were wounded in separate shootings that same day.
Then, around 4 a.m. Sunday, a man was killed and two women were wounded in a shooting in the 200 block of Tacoma Avenue. Neighbors on Tacoma Avenue did not want to talk on camera on Monday but one neighbor told News 8 she could not sleep since the shooting.
Three other people were wounded in shootings on Temple Avenue, Shadeland Avenue and Riverside Drive. In addition, a man walked into Community North Hospital with a gunshot wound.
Officer Tommy Thompson of Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department said the shootings were not random acts of violence. He said many of them, including the fatal shootings, involved disputes between people who knew each other. In addition, he said, some of the people who were wounded this weekend were uninvolved bystanders.
“This is not random. This is not someone that’s been shot,” he said. “That’s something to take into account, right? These are known individuals to one another that are participating in some type of activity where a firearm was produced and now we don’t utilize that conflict resolution.”
Thompson said although police believe they know who to look for, especially in the fatal shootings, community members should come forward with any information they might have. He said people can leave anonymous tips with Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana.
“Think if these victims were your family member, your father, brother, mother, sister, we need your help. We need the community’s help,” he said.
Despite the violence, Thompson said violence in Indianapolis continues to drop overall. He said there have been 21 criminal homicides and 73 nonfatal shootings so far this year, compared to 28 criminal homicides and 82 nonfatal shootings at this same time last year. Those are reductions of 25% and 11%, respectively.
