Cooper Lutkenhaus from Justin Northwest is the world indoor champion in the 800 meters. He’s only 17 years old and is still a junior in high school. According to NBC 5’s media partners at The Dallas Morning News, it’s one of the most remarkable accomplishments in the history of track and f ield, and it was done by someone who still attends Northwest and trains there. Lutkenhaus won Sunday’s 800-meter final at the World Indoor Championships in Poland with a time of 1:44.24. He became the youngest world indoor champion ever, and his time was just outside the top 15 in world indoor history. He held off Belgium’s Eliott Crestan, the fourth-fastest man in indoor world history with the 1:43.83 that he ran in February. Crestan took second Sunday in 1:44.38.
