New safety measures coming to Shockoe Bottom after mass shooting

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — New safety measures are coming to Richmond's Shockoe Bottom after a late February mass shooting left two people dead.
In the early morning hours of Saturday, Feb. 21, nine people were shot in the 00 block of N. 18th Street. Two of those victims, 23-year-old Genesis Tamar J
ones of Petersburg and 42-year-old Dominic Antoine Jackson of Henrico County, died at the scene.
Since this incident, the Richmond Police Department has been meeting with business owners in the area to discuss ways to make the community safer.
Those business owners have noticed that the violence has had a chilling effect on the community.

"People are scared -- and I don't want them to be scared, because it is a great vibe, and it's fun and ... so it's absolutely sad," said La Bodega owner Adrienne Londono.
Safety measures in the works include the installation of six new security cameras throughout Shockoe Bottom in June, as well as a mini-substation near Main Street Station, where officers will be stationed on weekends.
"The more cameras, the better," Londono said. "I'd love for it to be booming again -- and everybody outside, like talking to each other."
Police said the substation will open in a few weeks, with officers staffing it from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m. on Fridays, Saturdays and into Sunday mornings.

Londono suggested some additional steps that could make the area safer, including some measures that were in place when she opened her business in 2019.
"At 2:30, [like] clockwork, a street cleaner would come down the street and spray water -- and it was great, because the streets were clear," she said. "No one wanted to be sprayed. What girl leaving a place at 2:30 a.m. wants to get sprayed by water?"
Richmond City Council president Cynthia Newbille and Richmond Police Chief Rick Edwards recently met with Shockoe Bottom residents to discuss upcoming safety initiatives, including a Safety Ambassador Program. 8News will have more information on this next week.
