Scammers offering help with pumping gas charge victims' cards after they're gone
Mar 20, 2026
As gas prices rise, the risk of pump-switching — a scam where people offer to pump your gas and then pump some more on the victims’ tab after they’ve driven away — is increasing as well.
Two people who spoke to NBC10 said they have fallen victim to the scam at a gas station in Center Cit
y in recent months.
The scam can be costly.
Mignon Adams said that she was a victim of pump-switching in February at the Sunoco on Walnut and 22nd streets. Her $28 gas fill up turned into a $150 lesson, and she did not even accept the initial offer from someone to pump her gas for her.
“A young man walked up to me and said, ‘Can I fill your tank for you if you want?’ And I said. ‘That’s okay, I’ll fill it,'” she recalled. “I got out and I filled the tank.”
However, the suspect was still not done trying to steal from her. He did not walk away, and then offered to put the pump back for her when she was done.
“He said, ‘I’ll put it back on the gas pump for you,.’ ‘Oh okay I said,'” Adams said. “He walked over and put, I thought, put the nozzle back on the fuel pump. Sure looked like it.”
Adams said she thanked and tipped the man. But the man did not put the nozzle back into the pump fully, leaving the gas tab open.
“The bill was $150,” she said. “I drive a Toyota. There isn’t anyway you could get $150 worth of gas in my cars gas tank.”
Amy Trachtenberg said the was also victim to pump-switching at the same gas station.
“They do come up to you and say, ‘Can I help you?'” She said. “I got my credit card bill and there’s a $75 charge on that station.”
The manager of the gas station said they’ve put up signs to warn people about scammers, which he said it’s been an ongoing problem for the last year.
For Adams, the loss did go unnoticed.
“There may be some people that happens to that they may not be able to buy groceries that week,” she said.
Philadelphia police said they are currently looking into the situation.
Sunoco told NBC10 that the gas station is operated by 7/11, who we reached out to and are still waiting to hear back from.
