‘Flappy Gilmore' the peacock on the loose in South Jersey since Monday: Police
Mar 20, 2026
A peacock is strutting his stuff and evading capture in Deptford, New Jersey.
The police department in the Gloucester County community has been trying to return the colorful bird since he escaped his enclosure during Monday’s storm.
“In 23 years, I don’t think we’ve ever gone to a pe
acock call per say.” said Sgt. Robert Jones of the Deptford Police Department.
The peacock is owned by the Sapphire Grand, a catering and event space, which has a total of seven peacocks, including the one that remains on the lamb.
“As soon as we approached it, the peacock took flight and landed on top of a fence,” said Cpl. Matthew Principato, of the DPD. “At that point we were able to snap a quick picture with it, and then it took off into another yard, and then it started flying.”
Officers have begun calling the wanted peacock “Flappy Gilmore.”
“Flappy Gilmore, that might have to stick, I like that,” said Mel Maguire, of Sapphire Grand.
The small business said the peacock escaped after netting was knocked down during Monday’s severe storms, and that they hope that Flappy returns so he can be with his peacock friends.
“It’s where his friends are,” said Tom Sparano. “Not many other peacocks roaming Deptford or surrounding towns, so yeah, it would be best if he got back here. I’m sure they miss him.”
Police said that if anyone sees Flappy, to try calling Sapphire Grand, who they say may be better equipped to catch him.
““Maybe they have some magical way of wrangling the little sucker,” Jones said.
