RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- With the fate of the SAVE America Act now in the hands of the Senate, Virginia lawmakers are divided.  The bill would require prospective voters to prove they are an American citizen in order to register to vote for a federal election. Plus, the bill would also require vot ers to present an approved photo ID in order to vote in federal elections.  In a statement, Republican Congresswoman Jen Kiggans (VA-02), who voted for the SAVE America Act in the House, said in part, “Requiring photo ID to vote and proof of citizenship to register are common-sense measures that strengthen trust in our system and ensure elections remain free and fair. I urge my colleagues in the Senate to send it to the President’s desk.” However, Virginia Democratic Senator Mark Warner said while he supports voter ID laws, like the one Virginia currently has in place, he doesn’t support the SAVE America Act because it could be hard for some Virginians to get the documents, like a passport, needed to prove their citizenship under the bill.  “Women who’ve changed their names when they got married, would have to go back and find their birth certificate or marriage license and go back and re-register to vote, or get a passport. About 40% of Virginians don’t have passports,” Warner said. Plus, Warner said the bill would require Virginia to turn over its voter rolls to the Department of Homeland Security.  “I would not trust DHS at this point to not manipulate those voter rolls and knock people off the ballot arbitrarily, knock 'em off the voting list arbitrarily,” Warner said. Meanwhile, Republican Congressman John McGuire (VA-05) sent 8News the following statement on the SAVE America Act.  “Securing America’s elections is a priority for Republicans and it should be the same for Democrats. American elections are for U.S. citizens only. We all know anyone who doesn’t want a photo ID wants to cheat,” McGuire said. “If you need an ID to buy alcohol, get on a plane, or pick up medicine, it’s only common sense you would need an ID to vote. I urge the U.S. Senate to pass this critical legislation so we can get the bill to President Trump’s desk and restore confidence in our election process. The safety and integrity of America’s elections depend on this bill’s passage.” Warner said with 60 votes needed, the SAVE America Act won’t pass the Senate.  Warner said that because 60 votes are needed, he predicts the SAVE America Act will not pass the Senate. ...read more read less
