Rather than correct the record, I allowed the story to stand, because it served its purpose better than the truth would have. Every ta le you were told about me made your own reflection easier to avoid. You preferred it that way, and I have never been in the habit of denying preference when it reveals so much. My role was never to deceive, only to notice where you were already doing that work for yourselves. A slight question, a pause, a moment of clarity, these are hardly the tools of the monster you imagined.
