(KRON) -- A beloved Oakland Zoo tiger has passed away. Mia died after it was determined that cancer had spread throughout her body, the zoo announced on social media Wednesday. The zoo made "the difficult decision" to euthanize her. Mia's cancer was in its advanced stages, and the zoo deemed treatm ent to be too "extensive and invasive." Mia arrived at Oakland in 2022, along with fellow tiger Lola, from deplorable conditions at a roadside zoo in Oklahoma. Before living in the Bay Area, Mia and Lola had connections to the infamous Joe Exotic. His association with big cats was featured on the popular Netflix show "Tiger King." Lola died earlier this year in January from a severe infection that spread throughout her body. "In 2022, we had the opportunity to rescue Mia and Lola from a roadside zoo, where they lived in tiny cages under severely substandard conditions. We were honored to provide them with a better life, offering the highest standards of animal welfare and veterinary care." Mia's death has the community mourning her loss. Comments on Oakland Zoo's social media posts expressed sadness for the deceased tiger. Comments honoring Mia include: I’m devastated… I remember seeing them come up to the gate last summer. Lola and Mia are now together again in tiger heaven. So sad to see the last beautiful Tiger at OZ leave us.
