INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A 17-year-old was taken into custody Tuesday after police say he tried to rob his rideshare driver, resulting in the driver crashing into a police car in an attempt to get help. The initial incident happened around the intersection of 38th Street and North Sherman Drive, when an Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officer patrolling the area spotted an SUV driving erratically before it eventually jumped a curb. The SUV hit the back of the cop car as a result. Police say that the officer noted the driver appeared distressed and was pointing at their passenger. The passenger, the 17-year-old male, jumped out of the SUV and ran from the scene. The officer chased after him, taking the suspect into custody as he tried to climb a barbed wire fence. The teen also reportedly tossed a backpack during the chase. When later speaking with the driver, investigators learned the teen held a gun to them, saying, “I will shoot you if you move.” The teen then got hold of the driver’s phone, opening apps to start transferring money to himself. He also demanded that the driver take him to an ATM to withdraw more money. Noticing the officers in the area, the driver started swerving to catch their attention, eventually crashing into the marked patrol car and alerting officers of the incident. The teen faces charges of armed robbery and resisting law enforcement. The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office was expected to make final charging decisions. IMPD also says they “don’t recommend bumping into one of our police cars to get an officer’s attention, we are thankful that our officer acted quickly to help this driver and that no one was seriously hurt.” Crime Resources Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana: 317-262-8477 P3tips app | Apple devices | Google Play ...read more read less
