A New York City Council bill under consideration wants to limit the number of items at self-checkout in an effort to combat retail theft. Pharmacies and grocery stores across the five boroughs would be required to limit the number of items customers can bring to the self-checkout line to 15. Sto res must also staff at least one employee nearby for every three kiosks, according to the proposal. Failure to enforce the rules, if passed by the council, would result in a $100 daily fine. The law would go into effect one year after becoming law. Councilwoman Amanda Farias (D-Bronx) introduced the legislation last week to the NYC Council. The bill currently has four additional sponsors. The supporters of the proposed legislation hope the law could cut down on theft across the city, while opponents worry it could make store operations more difficult for shoppers and employees.
