Governor gives update on potential Bears move
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Indiana Gov. Mike Braun on Tuesday gave an update on the potential Bears move to northwest Indiana from Chicago’s Soldier Field
The Republican governor spoke about the prospect of an NFL stadium in Gary during an economic
development announcement on the life sciences at the Statehouse.
Braun said several factors have led to added attention for Indiana’s proposal.
“That is still something that is moving methodically ahead. Their (Illinois’) legislature is in session starting again this week, and it goes through the end of May. That has given more profile to our state along with what the (Indiana University) Hoosiers did in football. That’s given us a synergy that we’re getting attention.”
The Hoosiers won the College Football Playoffs National Championship on Jan. 19 over the Miami Hurricanes at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida.
The Bears in late February noted Indiana’s passage of Senate Bill 27, which the governor signed hours after it was approved in the legislature.
The Bears played their home games at Wrigley Field from 1921 to 1970 and have played at Soldier Field since 1971. The team has tangled for years with Chicago and Illinois officials over a proposed new stadium in the suburb of Arlington Heights, north of Chicago.
