SHOALS, Ind. (WISH) — The body of an 82-year-old Fortville man was found Monday still in his truck after he was swept off of a flooded road on March 9 in Martin County, according to a news release issued Tuesday from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. Search teams were using sona r equipment and conducting surface searches to find James Petty and the submerged truck. High water levels and swift currents complicated the efforts. Divers were able able to reach Petty’s truck that was below 20 feet of flood water. Martin County dispatch received a 911 call at 2:37 p.m. on March 9 from the passenger of the truck, who had managed to escape as water overtook the vehicle. Floodwaters swept the truck from Spout Springs Road, located south of Shoals and the East Fort of the White River. It’s an area prone to flooding, the release said. The Town of Shoals, Indiana, Facebook page on March 8 had Spout Springs Road on a list of more than a dozen flooded roads. The post said, “For your safety and that of others, please refrain from attempting to drive through flooded roads.” Emergency crews from of the Shoals Fire Department and the Martin County Sheriff’s Department used a boat to rescue the passenger, who was holding onto a tree vine after climbing out of a truck window, the Natural Resources release said. Fortville is a Hancock County town of 4,900 residents that’s about a 45-minute drive northeast of downtown Indianapolis.
