(KRON) -- The Lake Tahoe region is experiencing a warmup, with temperatures forecasted to reach the 60s. Skiers and snowboarders refer to it as a bluebird day. Snow surveys are conducted by the California Department of Water Resources. State climatologist Dr. Michael Anderson gave an outlook on what the current numbers mean. “At this point, it’s really going to be hard to get to April 1 and be anywhere close to average given that our expectations are to be much warmer than normal,” said Anderson. According to Dr. Anderson, the ideal situation would be a large amount of snow in the Sierra that melts slowly from spring through summer. That helps to fill the state’s reservoirs and to keep California out of a drought. “As the snow melt kind of tapers off towards the end of the snow melt season, we have our reservoirs full, and we can kind of use some of that storage to get us back down to our end-of-season conditions, as we get ready for our next water year,” Anderson said. The next survey of the statewide snowpack will be done on April 1 and will be the fourth and final one of the season. ...read more read less
