Warriors coach Steve Kerr now can add Oscar winner to his impressive awards collection after taking home the hardware Sunday as an executive producer for the documentary short “All the Empty Rooms.” While Kerr on Monday didn’t take much credit for the film, noting his title was “a fancy w ay of saying I had nothing to do with it,” he expressed how honored he was to be associated with the 35-minute look at how families have memorialized the bedrooms of children killed in mass shootings. “They asked me about a year ago if I wanted to be an executive producer, and I jumped at it when I read about the project because it’s such an important film,” Kerr told reporters at Capitol One Arena on Monday about the movie, which follows broadcast journalist Steve Hartman and photographer Lou Bopp as they interview the families. “Once I saw it, I was just blown away by the beauty, the sadness, the humanity, so poignantly done. And I think that it’s important, especially given my advocacy for gun violence prevention. “You look for ways to touch everybody and avoid the political discourse that brings the issue down, and I just thought the film perfectly threaded that needle.” As Kerr noted, the Warriors coach has been an outspoken advocate for common-sense gun reform after his father was shot and killed in 1984 while serving as the president of American University in Beirut. Kerr penned an op-ed for the film in the Los Angeles Times earlier this month, writing, “What mattered to me right away was how the film listens to families.” “It gives them room to speak about their children without exploiting their stories into politics or spectacle,” Kerr continued in that piece. “There’s a dignity in that choice, which is difficult to find in the way our country usually talks about gun violence.” Kerr, a nine-time NBA champion as a player for the Chicago Bulls and coach of the Warriors, now joins Steph Curry (executive producer, “The Queen of Basketball” in 2022), Shaquille O’Neal (executive producer, “The Queen of Basketball” in 2022) and Kobe Bryant (narrator and writer, “Dear Basketball” in 2018) as NBA stars to win Oscars. The Warriors coach wasn’t on hand Sunday to help accept the award as Golden State fell 110-107 to the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden, and he noted he won’t receive a statuette. But before Kerr’s team looked to bounce back against the Washington Wizards the next day, he implored those listening to watch “All the Empty Rooms.” “It’s hard to watch, but it’s also unforgettable,” Kerr said. “And I do think that this issue is kind of a movement that we need to shift — our country, our citizenry, we need to move the issue, because it’s obviously not happening at the political level, but we know the power of protest and movements, and I hope sincerely that this film will help in that cause.” Download and follow the Dubs Talk Podcast ...read more read less
