San Jose police arrested a driver suspected of being under the influence following a hit-and-run collision early Saturday that left a bicyclist dead, the department announced Monday. The collision happened at about 2:30 a.m. Saturday in the area of Coleman Avenue and Hedding Street, police said. The driver, an unidentified man, was allegedly speeding northbound on Coleman Avenue when he hit the bicyclist, also a man, as he was crossing Coleman Avenue from west to east just south of the Hedding Street intersection. The bicyclist was not in a marked crosswalk at the time of the collision. The bicyclist died at the scene, police said. His identity will be released by the Santa Clara County Office of the Medical Examiner. The driver took off from the scene before officers arrived but later returned and “exhibited symptoms of being under the influence,” police said. He was taken into custody and booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail. This marks the fifth deadly collision in San Jose this year, according to police.
