WalletHub found Louisiana to be the fifth-most federally dependent state, with Louisiana’s state government depending on the federal government more than any other state.
While the state ranks first for government dependence, Louisiana ranks 22nd for residents’ dependence on the federal government, according to WalletHub.
Louisiana has the highest share of federal funding used as state revenue, says the Pelican Institute for Public Policy.
Federal funding helps state and local governments pay for things like infrastructure, education and healthcare. In fiscal year 2022, Louisiana received about $21.9 billion in federal funding, says USA Facts.
