NYC speed limits will drop to 15 mph in school zones, Mamdani says
Mar 16, 2026
Every New York City school zone will have its speed limit dropped to 15 mph by 2030, Mayor Zohran Mamdani said Monday.
The mayor said the Department of Transportation will use Sammy’s Law to bring down the speed limit at some 2,300 school locations by the end of his first term. Five hundred sc
hool zones had already been lowered since 2024, when the law took effect.
“Today’s expansion of Slow Zones for schools across all five boroughs is just the beginning. Lower speeds save lives, and we will use every tool at our disposal to protect our neighbors as they move about our city,” the mayor said in a statement.
Mamdani said the city will target 800 additional school zones this year, bringing the total with reduced speed limits to 1,300. He said the DOT will determine which locations to include in this year’s changes based on safety data.
The transportation department said that a pedestrian struck at 25 mph is more than three times as likely to be seriously injured as a pedestrian struck at 15 mph.
Mamdani on Monday also suggested reducing the speed limit to 20 mph on all New York City streets, it’s a move that would require a change in local laws.
