It’s not hard to stumble onto a bar in D.C. serving corned beef and cabbage or Guinness. But some Irish pubs take that extra step, whether it be rare decor imported straight from the Emerald Isle or a particular emphasis
on traditional Irish recipes.
Sadly, D.C. bid adieu to a few Irish standbys as of late: Duffy’s Irish Pub, Across the Pond, and Mattie Eddie’s. More Irish bars are on the horizon, however. Penn Quarter is still waiting to finally welcome Dead Rabbit, an iconic NYC bar known for its perfectly poured Irish coffees and Sunday roasts. And a partner behind now-closed Across the Pond will open a Dupont offshoot later this spring.
The Irish family-owned Dupont Circle hotel celebrates its heritage this March with its first-ever spirits festival and menu takeover by Cork-born chef and Hell’s Kitchen winner Ryan O’Sullivan. Meanwhile, the Baltimore region is home to Guinness Open Gate Brewery, the Irish stout’s massive U.S. headquarters with month-long Saint Patrick’s Day festivities and beer releases. Baltimore is also home to gastropub sensation the Wren, one of the New York Times‘ 50 Best Restaurants last year.
For our latest Irish map refresh since 2024, we add: Brookland’s promising newcomer the Harp and Cleveland Park standby Nanny O’Brien’s.
Here’s a map of the D.C. area’s 17 standout Irish bars, which will likely be more crowded than usual for Saint Patrick’s Day (Tuesday, March 17) but are worth a visit any day of the year. And to curb a craving for a proper order of fish and chips, go here.
