(KRON) -- A man who was riding a bicycle near San Jose’s Columbus Park was struck and killed overnight Saturday by a Tesla driver who was allegedly intoxicated, according to police. The collision occurred just before 2:30 a.m. in the area of Coleman Avenue and Hedding Street. San Jose Police Depa rtment investigators said a man driving a blue 2023 Tesla was heading northbound on Coleman Avenue at a high rate of speed when he struck the man on the bicycle. The bicyclist was crossing the road outside of a crosswalk just south of the intersection with Hedding Street, according to authorities. Arriving emergency responders pronounced the bicyclist deceased at the scene. Officers found that the involved vehicle had fled the area prior to their arrival. Using license plate reader cameras, police said the Tesla was located unoccupied away from the scene. “The driver of the suspect vehicle later returned to the scene and exhibited symptoms of being under the influence,” SJPD wrote. “Officers took the driver into custody and he was later booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail.” The fatal collision marks the city’s fifth traffic death of 2026. ...read more read less
