Infant found dead after ambulance crashes in Philly, police say

An infant was found dead and the child’s mother was hospitalized after a crash involving an ambulance driven by a family member, that officials said, happened in Philly’s Frankford section on Sunday morning.
According to police, the incident happened at about 5:15 a.m., after an ambulance and
another vehicle crashed at the intersection of Torresdale and Harbison avenues.
According to police, the incident happened when a private ambulance carrying the victims was headed southbound on Torresdale Avenue, traveling at a high rate of speed, but not operating with lights or sirens activated.
A source has told NBC10’s Brian Sheehan that the ambulance driver was a family member of the mother and child.
Police originally said the driver would face DUI and other charges, but it’s unclear if those charges have been filed.
At that time of the crash, officials said, the ambulance, operated by Medstar EMS, proceeded through a steady red light at the intersection with Harbison Avenue, striking a 2010 Honda Accord that was traveling through the green light along Harbison Avenue.
The force of the crash ejected both a one-month old infant and a passenger — identified as the child’s mother — through the windshield of the ambulance, officials said.
Both the mother and child were taken to a nearby hospital where, officials said, the child — identified by police as one-month-old Marian Harris — was pronounced at 6:17 a.m.
The child’s mother suffered severe head injuries and she has been listed in critical condition, officials said.
Police said that, prior to the crash, officers were initially responding to a separate radio call for an unresponsive infant at a residence on the 6600 block of Ditman Street.
Prior to officers’ arrival at that residence, police said that the mother and child left the location in the private ambulance in an attempt to transport the infant to the hospital.
Police are investigating whether the infant died as a result of the crash, or had passed away before the crash due to an unrelated medical emergency.
The 25-year-old man behind the wheel of the Honda, officials said, refused medical treatment.
At the scene, NBC10’s cameras captured images of an ambulance resting on its side as a result of the crash as crews continued to work at the scene while the roadway was closed to traffic on Sunday morning.
An investigation into this incident is ongoing, officials said.
