Update: Mar. 14 at 6:15 p.m.Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) District 6 crews have reopened all lanes on Interstate 471 near the Memorial Parkway exit after a vehicle accident involving an oil tanker occurred Friday night, a Facebook post KYTC District 6 states.The Memorial Parkway bridge overpass has also reopened, as KYTC District 6 bridge inspectors have completed their inspection and determined the bridge had no structural damage, and driving is safe to resume."Thanks to everyone for their patience, and hats off to the first responders, city/county agencies and our crews for getting the highway reopened in less than 24 hours!" the Facebook post states.See more information below:Update: Mar. 14 at 4:30 p.m.Kentucky Transportation Cabinet crews are working to reopen Interstate 471 southbound near the Memorial Parkway exit after a vehicle accident involving an oil tanker occurred Friday night.According to a Facebook post by Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) District 6 , the last step needed before crews can reopen the interstate is the repave and restripe the road.For the last 12 hours since the incident, first responders initially handled the crash and extinguished the flames from the incident. After, KYTC crews assessed the damage to come up with a repair plan. Then, environmental cleanup was completed of the area. After that, KYTC bridge inspectors analyzed the Memorial Parkway bridge overpass, where they found no damage to the structure. Last, contractors for KYTC began milling and repaving the roads, according to the Facebook post.KYTC District 6 reports that the current repairs are meant to be a temporary fix. In the future, crews will return to do a full resurfacing of the area, as well as repair the barrier wall and replace the highway sign on the overpass.KYTC District 6 hopes the interstate (both directions) reopens by the end of the day, and will keep residents updated via social media."Lastly, we want to thank everyone for their patience as we make these needed repairs. We know shutting down an interstate isn't anyone's idea of a fun time, but it's necessary to keep our crews and folks like you... safe," the post states.See the Facebook post below:Original story:Kentucky Transportation Cabinet crews are currently making repairs and assessing damages on Interstate 471 southbound near the Memorial Parkway exit (near the 4.33 mile point) until further notice.According to a press release by Kentucky Transportation Cabinet District 6, a traffic crash in Campbell County is the reason for the road closure.The interstate is blocked north of the Memorial Parkway exit until further notice, as bridge inspectors are reviewing the area and crews are repaving the interstate, the press release states.Travelers heading southbound on I-471 are asked to detour to Dave Cowens Drive towards Newport, Bellevue, and Dayton, and travelers heading northbound on I-471 are asked to take the Alexandria Pike exit towards Newport.Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear posted about the accident on social media. In his post, Beshear reports that an overturned tanker carrying gasoline on I-471 was involved in an accident.
