Martinez city staff recommends closing pickleball courts at Hidden Valley Sports Court
Mar 13, 2026
(KRON) -- The City of Martinez is recommending the permanent closure of eight pickleball courts located at Hidden Valley Sports Courts. City staff has recommended closing the courts due to persistent noise and traffic and parking complaints from nearby residents, city officials said.
The courts at
Hidden Valley have only been open for a year following the renovation of former tennis courts. A new tennis court and a renovated half-court basketball court were also completed as part of the same project.

Since the courts opened on Feb. 28 of last year, the city said it has received ongoing complaints from the neighborhood about the noise and impact on parking and traffic. The city cited a neighborhood survey last fall that indicated "significant negative impacts on the neighbors."
City staff have implemented multiple attempts over the past year to strike a balance between pickleball players and neighbors complaining about the noise, including:
Installation of signage and parking advisories
Two structured trial periods with revised operating hours
New court-specific rules
Encouragement of quieter equipment use, with volunteer enforcement
A survey of neighbors within 500 feet of the court
The city also hired an acoustical engineer who was unable to identify any way to mitigate the noise due to the courts' close proximity to residences.
"Based on the ongoing operational challenges and concerns over compatibility of these pickleball courts in a residential setting, City staff is recommending discontinuation of pickleball at this location," said Martinez City Manager Michael Chandler. "We invite public comment about this recommendation to help the City Council determine next steps."
The Martinez City Council is due to consider city staff's recommendations at its March 18 meeting.
