(KRON) -- Speed cameras that were recently installed in Oakland will begin issuing tickets on Sunday, following a 60-day warning period that started in January. An average of 3,600 warnings per day were mailed in the first five weeks of the trial, according to the City of Oakland. The automated spe ed safety camera program aims to slow traffic in order to reduce crashes and fatalities, city officials said. The 35 speed cameras were installed in 18 locations across Oakland. The cameras are located on: Martin Luther King Junior Way (between 42nd and 43rd streets) Claremont Avenue (between Hillegass Avenue and College Avenue) Foothill Boulevard (between Irving Street and 24th Avenue) Foothill Boulevard (between 19th and 20th avenues) Seventh Street (between Adeline and Linden streets) West Grand (between Chestnut and Linden streets) Broadway (between 26th and 27th streets) San Pablo Avenue (between Athens and Sycamore streets) Seventh Street (between Broadway and Franklin Street) Macarthur Boulevard (between Green Acre Road and Enos Avenue) Fruitvale Avenue (between Galindo Street and Logan Street) International Boulevard (between 40th and 41st avenues) Hegenberger Road (between Spencer and Hawley streets) 73rd Avenue (between Fresno Street and Krause Avenue) Bancroft Avenue (between 86th Avenue and Auseon Avenue) 98th Avenue (between Blake Drive and Gould Street) 98th Avenue (between Cherry and Birch streets) Bancroft Avenue (between 61st and 62nd avenues) Oakland speed safety camera locations (Image: City of Oakland) According to data released by the city, the locations that issued the greatest number of warnings for speeding 11 mph or more over the limit were 73rd Avenue, Broadway, Hegenbereger Road, 98th Avenue and Seventh Street. All cameras in the network issued a total of 140,445 warnings in the first five weeks of the trial period. The cameras capture the speeding vehicle’s license plate and citations are mailed to the registered owner. According to city officials, the images of license plates are sent to OakDOT for verification before fines are issued.
