OAKLAND, Calif. (KRON) -- Energy was high Thursday as 7,000 people welcomed their Oakland hometown hero Alysa Liu. The event featured song, dance, and praise from local leaders and artists along with special surprises to celebrate Oakland’s culture, which Liu represents. A laundry list of support ers welcomed the Olympic gold medalist back in style. “Thank you for showing up and showing out, this is crazy!” said Olympic gold medal-winning figure skater, Alysa Liu. Alysa Liu name pronunciation: Are you saying it wrong? First up, a singer from the Oakland School of Arts performed the song Liu skated to when she won gold. Oakland Mayor Barbara Lee was also on hand to present Liu with a key to the city. “We're presenting her an official proclamation honoring her extraordinary achievement from assembly member Mia Bonta to Assemblymember Buffy Wicks and Senator Jesse Arreguin. And these honors represent the pride of our community,” said Oakland Mayor Barbara Lee. But it didn’t stop there. Photo: KRON4 The event featured the Oakland Chinatown dragon dancers, tributes from local students and dancers, all celebrating Liu for her artistry and culture. While another Olympic gold medalist skater—Brian Boitano-- and the Golden State Warriors’ Steve Kerr and Steph Curry-- celebrated Liu's athletic achievement, honoring her with a “town jersey.” “From one gold medal winner to another, I just want to say, keep doing your thing and keep representing the Bay,” said Curry. Olympic gold medal-winning figure skater Kristi Yamaguchi also congratulated Liu on stage. “She stepped out onto the ice with such confidence, with joy, and most importantly, with her true self,” said Yamaguchi. An exuberant Liu thanked her fans for the outpouring of love throughout her journey. “I used to walk through here on lunch break from the rink over there.
