Alysa Liu name pronunciation: Are you saying it wrong?
Mar 12, 2026
OAKLAND, Calif. (KRON) -- In Oakland, a homecoming celebration was held for native Alysa Liu after winning a historic gold medal in last month's Olympics. During Thursday afternoon's celebration, Liu was introduced and namedropped multiple times by various speakers, notably Oakland Mayor Barbara Lee
.
However, it appears there have been a slew of different (and sometimes wrong) pronunciations of Liu's first and last name.
Host Sway Calloway introduced Liu by her first name, pronouncing it "Uhh-Lee-Suh." The host told the audience at City Hall that he had asked Liu herself how to pronounce her name before the ceremony.
Rep. Lateefah Simon pronounced the last name as "Loo." Lee said it as "Uhh-Lee-See-Uh" "Lee-Ouu," before shortly correcting herself to say "Le-Oh."
According to the official Olympics website, Liu's name is pronounced "Uh-LISS-Uh" "Lee-Ou." In the Olympics broadcast, after her gold medal-winning performance, her first name was pronounced as "Uh-LISS-Uh," contrary to what the athlete said in a recent interview with Newsweek.
Liu, who is of Chinese descent, told the outlet the correct way to say her name is "Uh-Lee-Suh" "Lee-Oh," the latter different than Lee's initial pronunciation at Thursday's celebration.

Liu told the outlet she gets a variety of pronunciations for her last name but said she "personally doesn't care." Growing up, her friends would pronounce her name differently from what she was called inside her household growing up.
The figure skater acknowledged that the technically correct way to say Liu can be "hard to pronounciate."
Have you been pronouncing it wrong? You're not the only one.
