Lake Village residents begin cleanup after deadly tornado
LAKE VILLAGE, Ind (WISH) – Gov. Mike Braun on Thursday traveled to Lake Village for a firsthand look at the damage left behind by Tuesday night’s deadly tornado.
The Republican governor took an aerial tour over the path of the torn
ado that killed an elderly couple and injured 10 others, surveying the storm damage by helicopter. Braun told News 8, “Seeing it from the air, you can get the totality of it, and here it was actually a little worse than I thought it would be, because where it hit, it seemed like it just took everything out.”
Braun talked to volunteers and first responders after landing outside the Lake Township Volunteer Fire Department in Lake Village, joined by staff and U.S. Rep. Jim Baird, who represents the area in Newton County.
The governor said he plans to look at the state resources needed and will have “federal discussions” about assistance. But, he also admired how the local community has come together to assist each other.
“It amazes me how the communities step up,” Braun said.
After thanking staff and emergency responders, Braun completed a ground survey of the Lake Village damage to get an upclose look at what needs to be done.
Torandoes’ severity
The National Weather Service has confirmed the tornado that tore through Lake Village was ranked an EF3 on the Enhanced Fujita scale.
Survey crews say the powerful storm produced winds of around 150 mph.
The tornado first developed just west of Aroma Park, Illinois, before crossing into Indiana and striking Lake Village and continuing toward the Demotte area before finally winding down. The national weather service says the tornado stayed on the ground for nearly 37 miles.
Officials also confirmed two additional tornadoes from the same storm system: An EF1 near Wheatfield, and EF2 west of Knox in Starke County.
