A man shot and killed his estranged wife and her parents before killing himself in Berkeley Township, New Jersey, officials confirmed. On Tuesday, March 10, around 5 a.m., police responded to a home on Fairwood Drive for a report of shots being fired. The responding officers spotted a man enterin g the home and then heard more gunfire inside the house, investigators said. “I am shot. I am shot in the house,” the homeowner, later identified as 61-year-old Allan Russell, told the 911 operator in a call obtained by NBC10. “Send an ambulance please.” In the audio, screams are heard in the background. The Ocean County Regional SWAT Team then entered the house and spotted the bodies of Russell and his wife, 60-year-old Michelle Russell. They were both suffering from gunshot wounds to the head. The officers then found three children who were unharmed. After clearing the home, the officers found a man, later identified as 37-year-old Vaughn Stewart of Maplewood, suffering from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to his head. He was taken to the Community Medical Center in Toms River where he was eventually pronounced dead. As the officers continued to investigate, they discovered multiple shell casings and the body of a third victim, 38-year-old Deonna Stewart, about 50 yards from the home on the side of Fairwood Drive. Investigators determined Deonna Stewart lived at Fairwood Drive with her three children and her parents, Allan Russell and Michelle Russell. Vaughn Stewart was Deonna Stewart’s estranged husband and father of her children, NBC10 confirmed. Officials said the two had been living separately at the time of the shooting. Investigators determined Vaughn Stewart entered the home early Tuesday morning and shot and killed Allan and Michelle Russell. He then chased Deonna Stewart down the street and opened fire, shooting and killing her, according to officials. Vaughn Stewart then reentered the home and shot himself, investigators said. Vaughn Stewart had previously been arrested in February and charged with making a death threat in a domestic violence case out of Union County, New Jersey, according to online court records. Records also show police responded to the Berkeley Township home multiple times for domestic violence incidents over the past few years. A law enforcement source told NBC10 Deonna Stewart had taken out a restraining order against Vaughn Stewart. “I have seen like the police came here, like last year maybe, and they took a man,” Nadia Kashia, a neighbor, told NBC10. The three children are currently in the care of the Department of Child Protection and Permanency (DCP) where Allan Russell worked as a case worker. “I’m so sad for them,” Kashia said. “But thank God nothing happened to them.” A picture of Allan Russell NBC10 also spoke with Quinn Gunderson who worked with Allan Russell. “Allan was the best of men. He loved with his whole heart,” Gunderson said. “I know my entire office is at a huge loss of missing him.” Gunderson created an online fundraiser to help cover funeral expenses for the family and support Stewart’s children. “We will be there for them,” Gunderson said. A DCP spokesperson also described Allan Russell as a dedicated public servant who positively impacted the lives and trajectories of families in his community. “He cared about children. He cared about the parents that were struggling,” Gunderson said. “He believed that people can change and be better for themselves and for their families.” ...read more read less
