Fortville man missing after truck swept off flooded road in Martin County

SHOALS, Ind. (WISH) — Indiana conservation officers were searching for an 82-year-old Fortville man after the truck he was driving was swept off a flooded road Monday in Martin County, according to a news release issued Tuesday afternoon from the Department of Natural Resources.

s were using sonar equipment and conducting surface searches to find James Petty and the submerged truck. High water levels and swift currents complicated the efforts.
Martin County dispatch received a 911 call at 2:37 p.m. Monday from the passenger of the truck, who had managed to escape as water overtook the vehicle. Floodwaters swept the truck from Spout Springs Road, located south of Shoals and the East Fort of the White River. It’s an area prone to flooding, the release said.
The Town of Shoals, Indiana, Facebook page on Sunday afternoon had Spout Springs Road on a list of more than a dozen flooded roads. The post said, “For your safety and that of others, please refrain from attempting to drive through flooded roads.”
Emergency crews from of the Shoals Fire Department and the Martin County Sheriff’s Department used a boat to rescue the passenger, who was holding onto a tree vine after climbing out of a truck window, the Natural Resources release said.
In Martin County, the National Weather Service at Indianapolis has issued a flood warning through Thursday for the East Fork of the White River at Shoals. The warning, last updated Tuesday morning said, “Minor to moderate flooding continues on the East Fork White after the significant rainfall last week. Additional rainfall of 0.75 to 1.5 inches today through Wednesday night was included in the forecast. The crest on the East Fork is near Williams, with the stage at Shoals expected to begin falling Friday.”
Fortville is a Hancock County town of 4,900 residents that’s about a 45-minute drive northeast of downtown Indianapolis.
Shoals is a town of 676 residents that’s about a 2-hour drive south-southeast of downtown Indianapolis.
