Region VI Wrestling: Lawrence’s Steven Ham takes 2nd at 132; Robbinsville grabs pair of 3rdplace finishes
Mar 07, 2026
JACKSON TWP. — The Colonial Valley Conference will send a contingent of five capable wresters from Region 6 to the state tournament in Atlantic City, but for the fifth straight year none of them will go there as a region champion.
In results out of the Region 6 Tournament at Jackson Township on Sa
turday, only one CVC wrestler was able to reach the region finals.
That wrestler was Lawrence’s Steven Ham (43-1), who suffered his first loss of the year when he dropped a 13-3 major decision to Andre Moreno of Seton Hall Prep.
Takings thirds from the CVC were Robbinsville’s Alexander Viscido (106) and Tyler Shane (175), and Lawrence heavyweight Zane Spencer. Finishing fourth and also qualifying for the state tournament was Notre Dame 215-pounder Ivan Yultukhovskyi.
Ham’s 13-3 loss was not quite as one-sided as the final score might indicate.
After giving up two takedowns in the first period, Ham was very close to scoring one of his own right before the second-period buzzer that would have cut Moreno’s lead to 6-4.
Instead, Ham went into the third period trailing, 6-1, and was in the very difficult position of having to chase points against a Seton Hall wrestler who is now 31-8.
Robbinsville’s Viscido (37-4) and Shane both impressed by coming in third.
In his consolation final, Viscido was on fire when he won by a technical fall over Howell’s Justin Jani. This win was even more impressive when you consider Jani had beaten Viscido by the score of 11-8 in the quarterfinals before the Raven junior stormed back with three wins.
After losing in the semifinals to a region runner-up, Shane (35-7) also rebounded with two wins to punch his ticket to Atlantic City. His last bout was a comfortable 10-3 win over Nicholas Allen of Ocean Township.
Spencer (35-4) bounced back from a quarterfinal loss with three straight wins to take a third. Along the way he beat Ewing’s Cephus Horton on the ultimate tiebreaker and then Burlington Township’s Kyheem Freeman 4-1.
Although he was forced to settle for fourth, Notre Dame’s Yultukhovskyi did a good job of hanging in there to also make the state tourney. Along the way the Irish sophomore beat Steinert’s Mikey Odige for the third straight time after losing to him in their first meeting of the year.
Hightstown’s Chris Florio (120), Lawrence’s James Lyons (190) and Ewing’s Horton all won their fifth-sixth place matches.
Chase Millen finished third for Northern Burlington at 113 pounds.
