Three luxury homes in Metairie and New Orleans led the region’s residential real estate market for the week of Feb. 22–28, each closing for more than $2.4 million. Among the top sales – and fittingly timed with Women’s History Month – was a historic Coliseum Square mansion that once housed the Sophie B. Wright School and later The Catherine Club, a boarding house that supported women pursuing education and careers.
The top sale of the week was 611 Hector Avenue in Metairie Club Gardens, which sold for $2,991,500 on Feb. 27. Built in 1940 and situated on 0.44 acres of oversized, walled grounds, the residence offers 5,882 square feet of living space with 5 bedrooms and 7½ bathrooms.
Previously featured in the “On the Market,” 1456 Camp Street in the Lower Garden District sold for $2,775,000 on Feb. 25. Built in 1856, the Italianate mansion is one of only two original homes remaining on Coliseum Square and has served notable roles over the 170 years of its existence, including as Sophie B. Wright School and The Catherine Club. The mansion features 5 bedrooms, 4½ bathrooms, and 6,405 square feet of living space on a 63-by-127-foot lot.
Rounding out the top sales was 26 Flamingo Street in Lake Vista, which sold for $2,450,000 on Feb. 27. Built in 2017, the luxury home includes 5 bedrooms, 6 bathrooms, and 5,870 square feet of living space, with an additional 1,423 square feet of covered outdoor space.
611 Hector Avenue is a three-story luxury home on a distinctive property in the prominent Metairie Club Gardens. The listing agent on the Feb. 27 transaction was Shaun McCarthy of McCarthy Group Realtors, while the sales agent was Paul Dastugue III of Property One, Inc.
Built in 1940, the home’s original features and interior details include hardwood flooring, crown molding, custom millwork, decorative medallions, chandeliers, and multiple fireplaces. A formal entry opens to separate living and dining rooms designed for entertaining.
The gourmet kitchen connects to a breakfast area and den, with French doors leading to the courtyard and landscaped grounds. The primary suite features a sitting area and two bathrooms. All additional bedrooms include en-suite marble bathrooms, with the option of a main-level primary suite in the den overlooking the backyard. A finished third floor adds flexible living space. There are laundry rooms on both levels. Outdoor areas feature a new fence, manicured courtyard, and generous parking spaces, including a three-car carport.
1456 Camp Street was built circa 1856 for businessman E.T. Robinson and first known as the E.T. Robinson Mansion. In 1884, the home transitioned into Miss Sophie B. Wright’s House Institute, an English and classical school for young ladies and children. Thirty years later, the institute transitioned into The Catherine Club, a boarding house that provided young women chaperoned housing, social and academic training, and job assistance.
The Catherine Club faded away in the 1960’s, and the mansion stayed vacant for over three decades. In the mid-1990’s, 1456 Camp St. was acquired by the Preservation Resource Center (PRC) of New Orleans, and then that same year, it was bought by new owners and transitioned back into a single-family home. In 2017, Mark and Terri Powers bought the luxury home.
Powers, a marketing and business consultant with a love for real estate renovations, took on the role of what she called the general contractor of the restoration. Throughout the renovation, the Powers uncovered hidden historic gems, including a fireplace in the laundry room, old newspapers, artifacts from horses and carriages, a more than century-old bullet believed to be tied to 19th-century shooting duels, an underground brick thoroughfare discovered during fence installation, and as many as eight layers of paint concealing marble walls.
“Every single floor, wall, baseboard, ceiling, exterior stucco, brick, marble, and wrought iron work – from the under carriage to the very top – was all restored and renovated,” she said. “I get the biggest compliment when people see it restored, and they say it looks and feels like a newer home. That means we really succeeded at restoring it to the level it deserves. We are proud to be a part of this restorative chapter of this incredible home’s history.”
The Powers’ labor of love at 1456 Camp Street was passed onto another couple in the Feb. 25 transaction. The listing agent was Eleanor Farnsworth of Latter Blum | Compass, while the sales agent was Ashley Guidroz of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Preferred.
“My clients were fascinated not only by the stunning architecture but also by the home’s history, including its time as the Sophie B. Wright School and The Catherine Club. That legacy of female empowerment makes the property incredibly meaningful,” said Guidroz. “The sellers took great care to preserve the home’s historic character while ensuring it is fully updated and move-in ready. From the soaring 16-foot ceilings and original chandeliers to the marble fireplaces and ornate plaster medallions, the craftsmanship is remarkable.”
The home begins with 16-foot ceilings adorned with ornate plasterwork, a 12-foot solid-wood pocket door leading into the dining room, an original marble fireplace, and Greek key moldings in each of the main rooms. The dining room includes trompe l’oeil fresco paintings. The living room and family room are each illuminated by 19th century neoclassical crystal chandeliers, a floor-to-ceiling mirror, and marble mantle with an elaborate brass mirror. Wood floors gleam under the natural light streaming through floor-to-ceiling windows, which offer views of Coliseum Square and its lighted fountain.
The heart of the home is a custom chef’s kitchen with Calacatta Gold marble countertops, custom cabinetry, a kitchen pantry, butler’s pantry, and state-of-the-art appliances. A mahogany staircase leads to en-suite bedrooms. A second staircase in the kitchen leads to the back of the home with 12-foot ceilings and two additional en-suite bedrooms. The second-level primary suite includes two walk-in closets and has large walk-out windows that open onto a balcony. The property offers four total private balconies and a 600-square-foot guest house. The backyard features landscaped grounds, a slate-floored patio, and a saltwater pool.
26 Flamingo Street, built in 2017, could be characterized as the newer kid on the block among this week’s homes in Commission Accomplished. The listing agents on the Feb. 27 transaction were Yvonne McCulla and James McCulla of Latter Blum | Compass, while the sales agent was Sandra Devia of RE/MAX Affiliates.
The three-story home begins with grand mahogany doors that lead into an open-concept layout. The gourmet chef’s kitchen boasts double islands, top-tier appliances, a butler’s pantry, and a pass-through bar with windows opening to the outdoor entertaining space. The kitchen also flows into the dining and living areas, complete with a bar and pool table space.
Antique, repurposed built-ins add charm and character throughout the living and dining spaces, while a fireplace anchors the main living area. The first floor also includes a private office and an en-suite guest bedroom. The second floor houses the primary suite and three additional ensuite bedrooms, while the third floor offers a flexible bonus space.
A wall of Nano and French doors opens to the expansive covered rear patio, featuring a full outdoor kitchen, bar, half bathroom, and landscaped views of Chrysanthemum Lane. The backyard includes a saltwater pool and spa. Additional amenities include elevator access to all three levels, a two-car garage, a circular driveway, and a whole-home generator.
