FRANKFORT, KY. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – The Kentucky Senate has passed a resolution aimed at expanding enrollment in Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library across the state.
Senate Joint Resolution 54, sponsored by Cassie Chambers Armstrong, focuses on increasing participation in the free book program, e
specially among children in foster care, low-income households and communities where enrollment is currently low.
The resolution directs the Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives and the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services to work together to identify ways to increase enrollment. One option being explored is offering sign-up opportunities when a child’s birth certificate is completed.
The program sends one free, age-appropriate book each month to children from birth through age five, regardless of income. State leaders say only about half of eligible children in Kentucky are currently enrolled.
Armstrong said the resolution highlights the importance of early literacy and the role families play in helping children develop language and reading skills before entering school.
She also thanked Mike Nemes for working with her on the measure and providing feedback during the legislative process.
The resolution now moves to the Kentucky House of Representatives for consideration.
