Written by Lennon Formaggini, Student Activities Department The energy at Skyline High School was electric.  Hundreds of students entered the building and eccentric costumes were on full display. Friends, family, and judges were eager to watch the team challenges at the Destination Imagination Reg ional tournament. The annual event drew more than 150 teams from across the Dallas region and served as the crucial starting line for teams hoping to prove their creative problem-solving abilities. After months of preparation, unique scripts, and engineered devices, students solved complex, open-ended problems combining science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics. When the final scores were tallied, Dallas ISD emerged as an undeniable powerhouse of innovation, where an impressive roster of 36 teams, representing 27 schools within the district, successfully punched their tickets to the next level. Angela Gier, Maple Lawn Elementary School DI coach, said students start with a blank team challenge and build a fully-realized technical performance. “That process has been incredible,” said Gier. “Their resilience when things didn’t go perfectly during practice is exactly why they succeeded today.” The Dallas region has proven its creative ability, and its students are primed to shine on the bigger stage. “We spent hours arguing over the best way to build our structure, but we really learned how to trust each other’s ideas,” Leo, eighth grade Dallas ISD student, said. “Hearing our school name called for State made every late afternoon worth it.” The road ahead is challenging, but Dallas ISD represents some of the brightest young minds headed to the finals. The qualifying schools now shift their focus to the upcoming Lone Star Finals competition at University of Texas at Arlington. Preparation for the state competition begins immediately, involving refined prop construction and even more intense rehearsal schedules.
