Virginia joins multistate lawsuit to block Trump’s latest tariffs

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Virginia has joined a coalition of blue states suing to block President Donald Trump's latest tariffs after the White House's previous attempt to levy import taxes on most of the world was deemed unlawful.
Attorney General Jay Jones announced on Thursday, March 5, that Virg
inia has joined the legal battle alongside about two dozen Democrat-led states against the White House over its recent effort to impose increased taxes on most imported goods.
The office of the attorney general argued that the president "has tried to claim powers he is not entitled to under the law" since the Trump administration introduced the first waves of sweeping import taxes last year.
"The Supreme Court already rejected this scheme once. Instead of respecting that decision, the Administration is taking further illegal actions that fly in the face of the Court’s ruling," Jones said in a release. "These illegal tariffs are nothing more than a tax on Virginia families and when a President tries to impose them without legal authority, it is our responsibility to step in and defend the rule of law.”
The latest legal move came after the U.S. Supreme Court in January blocked sweeping tariffs the White House imposed over the past year and rejected the president's use of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA).
The Trump administration did not back down after the ruling. It then leveraged Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974 to announce tariffs up to 15% on most imported goods worldwide.
The attorneys general of Oregon, Arizona, California and New York are leading the suit. Top prosecutors from eighteen other states also joined the legal fight, including Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington and Wisconsin.
The governors of Pennsylvania and Kentucky have also signed on.
