Women’s History Month is an opportunity to celebrate women from the past and today. The month-long commemoration uplifts women and non-binary artists and creatives by showcasing their work, distributing grants, hosting panel discussions, and featuring businesses at pop-up markets. One of the largest events on the SHE:DC program is a curated art show presenting 450 pieces of work created by 200 women and non-binary artists at Shop Made in DC in Georgetown and a pop-up space in Downtown DC (prices vary).   An Evening with Norah O’Donnell location_on Library of Congress language Website March 5 Broadcast journalist Norah O’Donnell unpacks her new book We the Women: The Hidden Heroes Who Shaped America at the Library of Congress’s after-hours program Live! At the Library. Guests can learn about women leaders and pioneers who have contributed to the country’s 250 years (free, but registration is required).   HER Gathering location_on Vera Cocina and Bar language Website March 5 Women are taking over Vera Cocina on International Women’s Day. Sip cocktails from women mixologists and bartenders, savor women-prepared eats, view art, and dance into the evening with live sets from women deejays (free entry).   Girl Dinner location_on Fish Shop language Website March 6-8 Here’s a flavorful way to commemorate the month: Fish Shop at the Wharf is serving a tasty “girl dinner” curated by Chef de Cuisine Ria. The waterfront seafood restaurant is utilizing ingredients from women suppliers to prepare fun dishes such as lobster spinach and artichoke dip, tots, and other playful bites ($65).   HerStory 5K location_on Freedom Plaza language Website March 7 On your mark, get set, go! Mayor Bowser’s annual FITDC HerStory 5K returns to Freedom Plaza. The 5K welcomes families and pets to participate in a jog through Downtown DC to celebrate the achievements of women in the District. The run begins at 10 AM. This year’s fitness festivities include the HerStory Kids Dash, where children 12 and under can run a modified race starting at 9:15 AM. There’s also a post-race festival with music and women-owned vendors to shop (free, but registration is encouraged).   History Film Forum: “Finding Edna Lewis” location_on Smithsonian National Museum of American History language Website March 19 Discover the legacy and recipes of chef Edna Lewis at a screening of the film Finding Edna Lewis. After the screening, food storyteller Deb Freeman will discuss Edna’s contributions to women’s history with museum curator Joanne Hyppolite ($15).
