‘Shocking the nation,' Jasmine Crockett concedes Texas Senate primary to James Talarico
Mar 03, 2026
Jasmine Crockett announced her concession in the Texas Senate primary to James Talarico on Wednesday morning, calling for Democrats to unify around the nominee.
With the majority of the state’s votes counted so far, Texas Rep. James Talarico led U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett by nearly six points.
The Democratic race for the Senate nomination had only three candidates: Crockett, Talarico, and Ahmed R. Hassan. At about midnight Wednesday, with more than 57% of the vote counted, Talarico has more than 52% to Crockett’s 46%. Hassan has about 1.3% of the vote.
“Tonight our campaign is shocking the nation,” Talarico said at about midnight Wednesday. “This is proof that there is something happening in Texas. Tonight the people of our state gave this country a little bit of hope, and a little bit of hope is a dangerous thing.”
Talarico addressed the voting issues in Dallas and Williamson counties, where voters on Election Day were required to vote in their precinct rather than at any polling place in the county. The confusion led to many people being turned away from voting locations.
The Dallas County Democratic Party filed an emergency petition to extend voting in the county until 9 p.m. to allow more people time to find their precinct and get in line. A district judge granted the petition, but the Texas Supreme Court later stayed the decision and ordered any votes cast by people who joined the line after 7 p.m. to be held separately.
“The voter suppression in my home county and in Congresswoman Crockett’s home county underscores the gravity of this moment,” Talarico said. “This is a people-powered movement to take on this broken, corrupt political system. This is truly a campaign of by and for the people. We are not just trying to win an election, we are trying to fundamentally change our politics and it’s working.”
Talarico said his campaign has recruited more than 28,000 volunteers organizing across the state and that they’ve broken grassroots fundraising efforts without taking any donations from corporate PACs.
“The number of young people who showed up to vote in this election is unprecedented. The number of Texans who have never voted before but showed up in this election is unprecedented. The number of Independents and Republicans who voted in this Democratic primary is unprecedented,” Talarico said.
If the numbers hold overnight, in November Talarico will face the winner of a May GOP runoff between U.S. Sen. John Cornyn and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton.
Under Texas law, if no candidate receives at least 50% of the vote in a primary, the top two vote-getters advance to a runoff election scheduled for May 26. Early voting in a runoff is set for May 18 through May 22. If a runoff margin is narrow, candidates may request a recount under rules outlined by the Texas Secretary of State’s Office.
An NBC News analysis says Democrats need to flip a net of just three House seats in the fall to take back control. It found that Democrats have an uphill battle to retake the Senate, where they need a net gain of four seats. They’ll have to successfully defend every seat the party currently holds, and flip four more on highly competitive and even outright Republican terrain.
About the candidates
Talarico was first elected to the Texas House of Representatives in 2018 and was named one of Texas Monthly’s Top 10 Best Legislators. He made headlines in recent days after his interview with Stephen Colbert aired on YouTube instead of CBS, in light of what Colbert characterized as the network’s fear of FCC blowback, drawing attention and fueling his fundraising on the first day of early voting.
Crockett has represented Texas’s 30th Congressional District since January 2023 and was named to the Root 100 List in 2021 for her voting rights advocacy.
Hassan owns a mortgage and real estate company in Katy and has previously sought federal and county office in Texas, as well as the U.S. Senate in Minnesota.
What happens next
The winner of the Democratic U.S. Senate primary will face the Republican nominee in the Nov. 3 general election. Early voting for the general election is scheduled for Oct. 19 through Oct. 30.
