What do closeted hockey players, a former first son, and a Dr. Seuss character have in common? All are subjects of doppelgänger competitions in DC this weekend. The search is on for Washington’s version of Heated Rivalry characters Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov (played by Connor Storrie and Hu dson Williams), Love Story protagonist John F. Kennedy Jr., and Seussian hero the Lorax. First on the docket is a Heated Rivalry event at the Anthem on Friday, March 6. The competition is organized by event group Club 90’s, who have been throwing Heated Rivalry raves around the country. (A bass drop after Rozanov’s iconic line, “I’m coming to the cottage?” Why the hell not.) Unlike the freewheeling, hippie-dippie contests of yore, this event is strictly curated. Hollonov hopefuls had to submit photos in advance, and five candidates for each player have been selected to compete in the Stanley Cup of lookalike competitions. You can credit anthology series Love Story for the resurgence of fascination with the George founder and wife Carolyn Bessette Kennedy. This isn’t the first time a Kennedy scion has inspired a lookalike contest in Washington: When other cities were searching for knockoffs of celebrities such as Timothée Chalamet and Jeremy Allen White in fall 2024, we played host to a Jack Schlossberg lookalike contest, bringing a slew of clean-cut brunettes to Meridian Hill Park. A rotund orange politico with a lot to say is also getting the twin treatment this weekend. We’re talking about the Lorax, of course. Mustachioed characters can speak for the trees at the University of Maryland’s basketball game on Sunday, March 8 during a Lorax-off. The timing is somewhat quizzical: The Terps will be playing Illinois, who claim orange as a school color. Still, Thneed haters can stick it to the Once-ler in honor of the classic Dr. Seuss book. This weekend’s victors will join the exclusive coterie of local doppelgängers, which currently includes the Schlossberg double and a ringer for Bad Bunny. If past competitions are any indication, the events bring more than just lookalikes. You’ll also find hordes of thirsty onlookers, eagerly searching for a more accessible version of their famous crush. Related Wait—Is “Heated Rivalry” Inspired by Alexander Ovechkin?
