The San Francisco Unified School District is investigating a math teacher at Lowell High School amid questions about his teaching methods. The investigation centers around complaints over potentially inappropriate questions about girls and weight Tom Chan featured in his tests. Students said the educator is now on leave, but the district has not confirmed Chan is suspended. Lowell High seniors Jayden Grajeda and Ezra Medad were in Chan’s class last year and both said some of the teacher’s test questions seemed odd. Medad remembered seeing some questions referencing fat kids or word problems calculating how much money to spend on a date with a girl based on her weight. Parents have reportedly now raised concerns about the test questions. Grajeda and Medad said Chan’s class is unusual. “H he has some odd mannerisms to him, but he’s a good guy,” Grajeda said. “He has kids. He just seems like a lovable kind of enjoyable teacher.” Besides odd questions on tests, Chan also offered students extra credit for performances posted to YouTube titled “Grades or Dignity.” The principal at Lowell High School declined to speak with NBC Bay Area on Tuesday. The school district instead has issued a statement that said it takes concerns about Chan’s test questions seriously and is actively investigating. Grajeda and Medad said they never watched any of Chan’s videos and did not have to do extra credit. Both students understand Chan’s questions on tests could be offensive to some students, but they hope the educator will return to school sometime soon. “I don’t think he meant that stuff he said,” Grajeda said. “He was just trying to get the kids to focus and engage with the material and actually try to learn it.”  Medad also added Chan took the time to help students. “He helped us a lot and helped us understand it,” Medad said. “Compared to other teachers that are so fast paced. Like when you ask a question, he’d go into depth about it.” The school district did not indicate how long its investigation will take and what kind of sanctions Chan could be facing. ...read more read less
