Governor Newsom announces new statewide unhoused funding and accountability
Mar 02, 2026
Gov. Gavin Newsom was in Hayward Monday morning, announcing a push for funding and accountability for people unhoused or struggling with mental health across the state.
In the press conference, Newsom announced an investment of $291 million towards getting more people off Californian streets, dru
gs and alcohol and into mental health services without going through the court system.
Newsom chose to make the announcement with state and Alameda County leaders by design because of what the county is doing to implement California’s CARE Act and CARE Court.
One of the supervisors that spoke Monday said that about 6,000 people in Alameda County are now housed and that the number of unsheltered people decreased 11% since the last point-in-time count.
