A man from Brazil is accused of breaking into his estranged wife’s home on Long Island and murdering her in front of their daughter, according to prosecutors.
Marcos Aurelio Marques-Leal was indicted Monday on a slew of charges in connection with the killing of Adriana Barbosa, said Suffolk Cou
nty District Attorney Raymond Tierney. Marques-Leal faces second degree murder, first-degree burglary and endangering the welfare of a child.
According to the DA’s office, Marques-Leal went to Barbosa’s home in Farmingville just after 8 p.m. on Feb. 12, where she lived with their 16-year-old daughter. In violation of an order of protection from family court, the 57-year-old tried to get into the home through a side door, but it was locked, so he allegedly tried to kick it down.
After that didn’t work, Marques-Leal went around back where he found a large planter, picked it up and threw it into the sliding glass door, the investigation found.
Barbosa fled to her bedroom along with the teenage daughter and locked the door. The daughter called 911.
Marques-Leal found them soon after and forced his way into the room, the DA’s office said. He lunged at Barbosa while wielding a knife, but their daughter put herself between her parents in an attempt to protect her mother.
But Marques-Leal was able to reach over her and stab Barbosa repeatedly in the head, neck, and body according to the investigation. The daughter suffered wounds to her hands as she tried to defend herself and her mother.
After the attack, Marques-Leal turned the knife on himself, stabbing him in the neck and abdomen, said the DA.
Officers responding to the scene found the family in the bedroom. All three were taken to Stony Brook University Hospital; the mother was pronounced dead shortly after, while Marques-Leal and the teen daughter were expected to survive.
“The charges in this indictment reflect a horrifying act of domestic violence that claimed the life of an innocent woman and forever changed the life of a child who witnessed it,” said DA Tierney. “No family should endure such terror, and no child should carry the trauma of seeing a parent killed before their eyes.”
The judge ordered Marques-Leal held without bail. His next court appearance was scheduled for March 25. If convicted, he faces up to 25 years in prison for the top count alone.
