RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- The owner of a cabaret theater in Shockoe Bottom is working to promote a better narrative of Richmond's nightlife following the shooting that occurred last weekend. Vinny Venuti, the owner of the recently opened Shockoe Bottom cabaret theater DreamHaus, wants to change the n arrative about what the nightlife "looks like" in Richmond. Before the deadly shooting on Saturday, Feb. 21, Venuti had worked on an initiative called the "Shockoe Shine," which promotes a guide for performing arts and music in Richmond's nightlife. Venuti shared that the theater is bouncing back after he and other businesses were closed during the weekend of the shooting. Over the past week, DreamHaus hosted live music, karaoke and private events. A week after the shooting, more Richmond Police Department (RPD) officers surveyed the Shockoe streets outside of the theater, along with the addition of newly installed cameras. So far, Venuti has approved of the efforts made. "There was a significant shift in feeling safer, but having officers running up and down the street — we don't want to have them do that, but that's where we are at right now," Venuti said. Through DreamHaus and Shockoe Shine, Venuti has hoped to see a change in the script through theater experiences that go beyond Richmonders only visiting bars and clubs. He believes that it's up to residents to keep communities safe, and the police should be there to help. "We hope the future leads to more community members stepping in, more business owners stepping up to encourage the safety aspect, encourage looking out for patrons and looking out for people who are even just walking the streets," Venuti said.
